Nordic Association of Linguists

The Nordic Association of Linguists

Welcome to the website of

The Nordic Association of Linguists (NAL)

NAL is a major forum for linguists working in the Nordic countries, and linguists elsewhere, working on a Nordic language, or in general linguistics.

Two series of international conferences are organized under the auspices of NAL: The Scandinavian Conference of Linguistics and the International Conference on Nordic and General Linguistics, the latter series traditionally with an emphasis on Nordic languages.

In addition, the Association publishes the Nordic Journal of Linguistic (NJL) with Cambridge University Press, and it covers all branches of linguistics but gives preference to contributions of general and methodological interest and studies on Nordic languages. Traditionally one of the issues of NJL every year is a thematic issue dedicated to a specific aspect of linguistics.

The Nordic Journal of Linguistics is published on behalf of NAL to a very high standard by Cambridge University Press. Many scholars interested in Nordic languages enjoy institutional access to current NJL articles through their university library; however, NAL members additionally benefit from the journal’s rich archive, stretching back to 1978, and independent scholars will find access to both current and archive NJL material particularly beneficial.

The fee for NAL membership 2021, including access to the NJL archive, is £20/€25. You become a member by contacting the Acting President Hans Götzsche, You will then receive an email message informing you about the personal details we need and about how to pay the fee by bank transfer.

As is well known by researchers, the research publication culture is currently in a process of transition. In the near future NAL will elect a new Executive Committee and maybe find new ways of supporting linguists and linguistics in the Nordic countries. The focus on language has never been more important than now, and the scientific approach to languages and languages needs to be maintained in the years to come. This can be done through the collaboration of linguists independently from their fields of expertise.

Members of the Association, as well as others interested in linguistic research carried out in the Nordic countries, are frequent users of the network
